Two Gloucestershire men, who work for the Forest of Dean Council as Environmental Health Officers, recently competed in the Annual Worthing Birdman Competition. Roger Garbett from and Keith Leslie from St. Briavels, took part by attempting to see how far a stepladder converted into a fixed wing aircraft could fly from the top of Worthing Pier. They were watched by thousands who lined the beach. The duo who are part of a team called "Health and Safety Gone Mad" aim to dispel some of the myths about Health and Safety by taking part in various unusual stunts. In this case there is a perception that stepladders can be dangerous and by trying to make one fly the duo aimed to show this was not so. Clad in white overalls and complete with “Biggles” flying helmets they jumped off Worthing pier with their stepladder but due to gravity they did not achieve much lift and fell into the sea. They splashed down unharmed to be picked up by the rescue boat. The crowd enjoyed their performance enormously. Roger and Keith say they may well return next year for a further attempt.
